Team McBride doubles
in Memphis
Of the four AMA/Prostar races contested
thus far this season, the result in Top Fuel has been the same each time
- Team Spiderman riders, Larry “Spiderman” McBride and Jimmy
“The Hulk” Brantley No. 1 and No. 2.
At the tour’s most recent event, The Schnitz Memphis Blues Nationals
from Memphis, TN, June 10-11, McBride finished the weekend, which also
contested the rain-delayed Lucas Oil Nationals from early May, by garnering
both victories with Brantley taking home two runner-ups.
It was McBride’s first opportunity for the elusive double since
he achieved the feat back at the St. Louis race of 2004.
“It’s another storybook season,” said McBride, who went
undefeated in 2004 before health problems forced him out of competition
for most of the 2005 campaign. “This time it’s even better
because Jimmy is running so well. We had some problems with his bike at
this event, but I fully expect him to be in the winner’s circle
soon.”
McBride qualified on the pole with a stellar 6.03 at over 220 mph at what
proved to be a difficult track to tune to.
“The temperature was over 100 degrees and the track temperature
was over 140 degrees,” McBride said. “We had never really
run in conditions like this and we didn’t have much data to tune
from.”
Despite the adverse conditions McBride and Brantley marched to yet another
final, where McBride defeated Brantley with a 6.11 at 236 mph to Brantley’s
6.47 at 220 mph.
“Wining is always great but we would have liked to run a little
better,” McBride said. “The track was pretty slick in the
heat.”
Currently McBride and Brantley are ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the point
series heading into the tour’s next stop, July 15-16, at Norwalk
Raceway Park.
