McBride
Does It Again!
For the second time this season
Larry McBride eclipsed the world record for the quickest drag bike run
of-all-time. The feat was accomplished in the final round of the Brainerd
International Raceway Big Race where McBride defeated nemesis Ron Webb
with an astounding 5.883 at 242 mph.
"We had no idea it was
going to run so well," McBride said of his supercharged Kawasaki.
"We had never run in high altitude like this so we were learning
as we went. We just kept tuning away and felt like we had the bike set-up
to run a 6-0 in the final. That's why I always say, never try to run
the big numbers, just do your job, and if it's going to happen it will
happen."
Amazingly McBride had no idea
he recorded his career best elapsed-time when he crossed the finish
line.
"I missed the first turn-off,
so I knew that I went over 240 mph, but I didn't know we broke the record,"
McBride said. "It wasn't until I waited for several moments at
the far end of the track for my crew that I realized that I just made
a heck of a run and they were up on the line celebrating."
The most impressive part of
the weekend for McBride was how the team managed to put together an
astoundingly strong series of runs in such unfamiliar conditions.
"The barometer was much
lower than what we were used to working with," McBride said. "I
was impressed at how we were able to lay down four solid runs at 5.97,
6.06, 6.06, and 5.88. That's pretty consistent for a Top Fuel bike."
McBride's victory kept his
2003 unbeaten streak intact and scored him the richest purse of his
career at a hefty $18,000 and an extra $700 for breaking his own record.
"Do I think we can go
quicker than this?" McBride said about his second career 5.88 pass.
"Most definitely."
McBride
stated how important of a role his sponsors and supports have played
in his success. McBride thanked:

Next up for McBride is the
biggest northern race of the year, the Pingel Thunder Nationals from
Indianapolis Raceway Park, August 9th-10th. McBride has been as quick
as 5.97 at Indianapolis, which is one of his favorite tracks with plenty
of shutdown. Make your plans to be there!
